my favorite pho spot in manhattan. i have never had or heard of a bad bowl of pho here. while chinese owned and operated, the chef is vietnamese. compared with its sister restaurant on mott street, the space is smaller and simpler, and the menu is much more pho-centric with over 20 varieties - and not too much else. i personally prefer the beefy simplicity of #16, tho options with permeations of tendon, tripe, and other meats abound. the broth is wonderfully aromatic with jewels of fat glistening on the surface of a nicely textured broth with a complexity and oniony goodlness that is satisfying and restorative. the meat always arrives raw and fresh and its flavor emerges splendidly as it cooks during your meal. the noodles are cooked to perfection - never clumpy, never too soft, with a marvelous mouth feel. the portions are generous, but the bowls are thankfully not too large for frequent slurping - highly recommended over use of the plastic spoon. the vegetables - thai basal and bean sprouts - are reasonably fresh, but are not the strong point here. get a side order of spring rolls and a hot drip cafe sua. the spring rolls are remarkably authentic, with a thin crunchy rind and a complex interior. the decor is appropriately nondescript, and the prices and very cheap for new york. the service is usually good, tho the servers do not speak vietnamese. i highly recommend this pho spot.

Where's the pho? Drove from PA, parked, took a taxi across the island to the address given here. Once dropped at the curb, we discoved the restaurant was a Hair and Nail Salon/Wireless Phone store. Evidently, this place had been out of business for a while. A hint to others: Call ahead if you're traveling over 2 hours for PHO!
